Raising a Raised Bed

Ever since we moved into our house and decided we wanted to plant a vegetable garden instead of flowers and lawn, I’ve wanted to build raised beds. The plan in my head for our backyard is inspired by pictures like these:

So we plotted and planned and budgeted and finally decided to go with these, raised beds built with patio stones instead of lumber. Given the cost of cedar, and the fact that it would need replacing in a few year, I figured that these beds made from patio stones would be a good investment. What I didn’t really figure is how HUGE they would be. Using 2X2 paving stones, we have a 10X4X2 bed. It is massive.

Here are some pictures:

First we leveled the spot I had picked for the new bed. Then we laid out the lumber built the lower frame out of cedar using the brackets from the raised bed kit.

The next step was to build a second frame – to hold the paving stones from the top.

I got to skip out of the toughest part of the job, lugging the paving stones. My dad and my husband did the heavy labour – those stones are too heavy for me to lift!

So here is the final result…

Now we just need some gravel and dirt and we’re ready to plant some veggies!

A big, big thanks to my Dad (who you see in the first picture above) who spent the afternoon building these beds for me! Thanks Dad.

Hi there, my Montreal Market Melon’s germinated in about 3-4 days on a heat mat. They can take a while to germinate if they are cold. How did you sow them?

I’ve tried twice now – My latest in seed staring mix in small pots are on top of the fridge where it’s warm. Maybe I’ll invest in a heat mat next year! One is germinating…I’m hoping for one more as a backup!
