Covet: Modern Quilts

It all started a couple of weeks ago at an auction when an old quilt came up. I have wanted an antique quilt for ages! I just love the look and the soft feel of the fabric that has been washed and loved for so many years. anyway, when a beautiful quilt with soft/pastel coloured stars ona white background, I was going to bid, but then I chickened out, it ended up selling for under $50, which was an incredible bargain.

And so began my latest obsession…quilts and quilting.I have decided that I need a wonderful quilt for the bed in our spare room.  The spare bedroom has not yet been decorated and is still a yucky yellow-y beige colour – blech. So far, it has been a catch all for everything we don’t have a place for. I have half a gallon of Benjamin Moore Mont Saint Anne paint leftover from my sunroom/office, so I think that I will put it to good use once I get the room cleaned out.

The first quilt I came across was this beautiful pattern from Kelly McCaleb Handmade. It reminds me of the Swiss flag, which holds a special place in my heart since that is where my husband and I spent our honeymoon. I love the clean modern lines and the choice of red and aqua. Although the pattern is modern and clean, the colour choice give the quilt a nostalgic vintage feel. Although I sew, I have never quilted before, but I am tempted by this pattern to give it a shot. It would be quite the winter project!

Film in the Fridge is a blog and an Etsy Shop all about quilts and quilting. I love this beautiful Spotted Squares Quilt. Her blog is absolutely choc-a-block full of gorgeous photos of beautiful hand quilts. I just love the random pattern of the white verses coloured squares and the mix of reds, greens and blues. Her blog is full of beautiful quilts as well as tutorials, including this one on how to make a fabric paper chain.

I also love this paintbox quilt By Elizabeth Hartley pictured on her blog Oh,Fransson. Her blog is truly inspirational and includes free patterns and quilting tutorials. I love the bright colours, and the white makes the colours seem to pop. I’m adding her blog to my favorites list!

And lastly, I found this tutorial How to make a ragged squares quilt from Crazy Mom Quilts. I think that this might just be the beginner’s quilting project that I’m looking for.

While I have the inspiration, I’m not sure that I have the patience for quilting. I think I’ll see if I can finish one or two of the projects sitting on my sewng table as we speak before I get into any new trouble! But maybe I’ll just browse for some fabric so I’ll be ready if my quilting muse strikes!
